Shimoda

Shimoda is a city on the southeastern Izu peninsula, in Japan's Shizuoka Prefecture. It's known for its busy port and hot springs. Beaches include Shirahama, a long sandy stretch with strong surf. Ryōsen-ji temple is where the U. S. -Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed in 1858. The Shimoda History Museum has exhibits on the town's role in opening up 19th-century Japan to international diplomacy.
