Colonia Department

Colonia is a department of southwest Uruguay, facing Buenos Aires across the Río de la Plata estuary. The departmental capital Colonia del Sacramento is known for its cobbled historic quarter and colonial Portuguese and Spanish buildings. Many house museums, including the Museo del Azulejo, filled with ceramic tiles. The Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse, surrounded by the ruins of a convent, offers panoramic views.
