Brexit: PM sends letter to Brussels in search of further delay

Jul 25,2023 8:41 pm

Boris Johnson has sent a request to the EU for a delay of Brexit - But without his signature.

The Request was accompanied by a second letter, under Johnson, saying That he believes Signed by Mr, a delay would be a mistake.

The clock was required by law to ask the EU for an extension of the 31. October period after the loss of a lower house vote.

European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted That he had received the extension request and advise the EU heads of state and government "How To respond".

Earlier, Mr Johnson rang the top European politicians, including Mr Tusk, to insist That The Letter "is to the Parliament 's letter, not my letter".

Opposition MPs have warned the PM That if he tried to circumvent Parliament 's instructions to delay, then he may find himself, in The Law courts.

Mr Johnson has promised to the press with the legislation to implement his proposal in the next week, But labor says it Will try to change it - with additional measures on issues such as workers ' rights and environmental protections.

Shadow chancellor John Mcdonnell told Sky News That Sophie ridge of the Prime Minister could be "well, In Contempt of the Parliament or the courts" by a second letter to the EU, the "cons", The First .

The debate

The PM has previously said he would be delayed as questions of the EU, The British exit the EU and the UK would leave on December 31. October is "eat or die".

But hours after losing a crunch vote in a historic Saturday session in The House of Commons, the Prime Minister appointed a senior diplomat for a delay, which was forced to him by MPs in the last month.

The second letter from Mr Johnson - Signed -off This Time - makes it clear That he personally believes That a delay would be harmful.

It says the government Will press on with efforts to pass the revised Brexit deal agreed with the EU leaders last week, in The Law , and he is confident That by the 31 October.

A cover-note from Sir Tim Barrow , The British representative in Brussels, said adhered to The First letter with The Law , as agreed by the Parliament .

the decision to send you three documents, which is to say "controversial", the "it's a fight, it Will bypass whether Boris Johnson is trying to court".

"This is straight to the court, and it can very quickly end up in the Supreme court," she added.

Asked on Bbc Breakfast whether the PM ' move s, was "childish, Conservative Brexiteer MP Nigel Evans has told: "Well, he would be criticized if he did not send The Letter , because it would be against The Law . "

He added That "it's All In our gift", and That the leaders of the EU can letter in two, and deny The Request for a delay.

What is the PM has to say in The Letter That he Signed ?

extracts from Mr. Johnson's letter to Lord Tusk:

"The UK Permanent representative is. The Request on behalf of the EU (withdrawal) (No. 2) Act, 2019 later today. It is, of course, That the European Council Will decide when you Will examine this request and, whether you grant it.

"Although, I would have preferred a different result today, the government, with the emphasis on the ratification and implementation of the necessary legislation at the beginning of next week I remain confident That we are in this process by 31 October.

"Although it is open to the European Council , the accession to The Request by the Parliament or an alternative offer of grace, I have made it clear since he was Prime Minister . a further extension would be to damage the interests of the UK and the EU partners, and The Relationship Between Us .

"We need to bring this process brought to a conclusion, so That we can move to the next phase and to build on our new relationship on the Foundation of our long history as neighbors and friends on this continent. "

On The First Saturday of seats in the lower house for 37 years to the deputies voted for a change in withholding tax approval of Mr. Johnson's " Brexit offer, until All of the required legislation has been adopted.

Presented by Tory MP Sir Oliver Letwin , the amendment was intended to ensure That Mr. Johnson would Act in accordance with the terms of the so-called Benn.

according to this law, Mr. Johnson had until 23:00 BST on Saturday to a letter asking for a delay in the UK ' s departure.

In a letter to MPs and peers on Saturday evening, he said: "I'm going to the EU to say what I have said, That The British public for my 88 days as Prime Minister : more delays, not the solution.

"It is quite possible That our friends in the European Union , the Parliament rejected The Request for a further delay (or not a quick decision) to take. "

The Commons defeat marked a severe setback for the PM, although Mr Johnson said he was not "discouraged or dismayed", and remained under great Britain up to the end of the month, with its "excellent offer".

'Spoiled brat'

John Mcdonnell , said MPs should now have the chance, the examination of the cancellation of contract law. He said Mr Johnson had removed certain protective provisions, which May in Theresa, you want to see with the EU and the work to be recorded.

"we want to go down the Boris Johnson 's proposals by way of derogation of our most important trading partner and liberalisation of our economy, undermines the rights of workers, consumers and environmental rights? No, we are not," he said.

"So What we try and do is to try, of course, and add to That the legislation and see if we can get the approval in the Parliament . "

Mr McDonnell said Mr Johnson was "behaving a bit like a spoiled brat" by an unsigned letter to Brussels.

Anna Soubry , the accused of The Independent group for change, to act on the Prime Minister as a "truculent child", while Liberal Democrat Christine Jardine MP, Mr Johnson said it was against The Will of The Commons .

the SNP leader in Westminster Ian Blackford said earlier That if the Lord did Johnson, As If he was "above The Law ", he would find himself in court.

On the EU side, there has been no official reaction yet to the contents of The Letter , except for Mr Tusk confirmed That he received it.

But has indicated to the President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron , already, That he is not believed, a new Brexit extension was good for everyone.

Reluctantly, the EU is of the view That the UK request

Boris Johnson 's spell literally his opposition to the extension of the Brexit process in writing in a separate letter to Brussels, so to say, makes it easier for his colleagues Emmanuel Macron , Angela Merkel and other your feet drag a little.

you prefer to look first, to make the Prime Minister on his promises to them, That their re-negotiated Brexit deal is *definitely* be adopted by the Parliament .

But , when push comes to shove, with the help of alternative, not a business. I can't imagine That the EU slammed the door in The Face of the UK now.

would you like to know what [the extension] is for. There are plans in the UK to hold a General election, a second plebiscite or a referendum on the new Brexit offer? Or is needed a little more Time to pass Brexit -relevant legislation?

The EU Parliament , the Brexit -the steering group discusses the results of the recent UK vote on Monday , said Brexit coordinator, Guy Verhofstadt .

He tweeted on Saturday: "What happens next, the marches outside Parliament to show the importance of close EU - UK's future relationship. "

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leader of The Commons , said the government planned to hold a meaningful vote on Monday , although it is not clear whether Commons Speaker John Bercow to allow it.
