Drink spiking: the men know enough?

Sep 11,2023 7:01 am

Many of The Victims of the serial rapist Reynhard Sinaga don't even know they were attacked.

entice people outside Manchester clubs, the post would take a graduate student to knock them back to his place and ply them with spiked drinks to you unconscious.

Although the drugs found in a very special set of circumstances, for his conviction on the General problem of drink throwing-spiking.

About three-quarters of The Victims are women, But men are equally At Risk .

How much the men spiking know about the risks of drink?

Jared Dolby, a 28-year-old philosophy student in Manchester, says a lot more practical information is needed about the dangers.

"I'm a Mature student and I come from a small town by the sea, and I feel, streetwise, But for some of these students come from privileged backgrounds, Manchester is a dangerous city.

"It could be more signage to help and advice available. Maybe it is a larger cultural Problem. It is a taboo to attack the men.

"you would hope that after such a terrible thing [the Sinaga case], would make people feel more ready to move forward and talk about these issues. "

James King, 25, a student, grew up in Manchester, says a lot, it depends on the "toxic masculinity".

"the men don't feel comfortable in your vulnerability. We probably have a lot to learn from women here.

"women expected that you will be able to ask for help, But rape is not something that men are expected to treat.

"Practically, maybe the employees of bars and Nightclubs need to be aware of the problems. Bouncer are happy to kick people, But maybe you need to like guardian figures. "

Lloyd Brinkworth, a 24-year-old engineering student, originally from Worcester, explains the University of Manchester, where A Number of Sinaga arrived, the victim, by E-Mail, the male students refers, in particular, on the available services.

"So, there is support. Outside of the University? I'm not so sure. "

a Fellow student Liam Ashton, 22, added: "We are a tight-knit group of friends and when we are traveling, we would always make sure that all is OK and The Girls to come home safely.

"But it is interesting that the University was for Young Men [with the Council].

"It's not something we really think. You want to know where to go? And you would want to even talk about it?"

What can be done to raise awareness?

Elaine Hindal, chief executive of alcohol education charity drink aware, says men are a "pervasive" of peer-pressure when It Comes to drinking water, what you can do, less aware of their vulnerability, if they could be in bars and clubs than women.

The Charity does not often hear that people would report a drink, as a Spike, because they fear, that they believed, or it is seen as "a pretext" for a little dehydrated.

Ms Hindal says, "was perhaps an even greater challenge for men", because there is not enough discussion of their susceptibility to wide.

she emphasizes that the vast majority of drink-spiking Victims are women, But that the Sinaga has brought the case, the Problem of male Victims to light.

"The kind of advice we give the women applies to you as Well as together, for themselves and others, together make a plan to come home so that you can stay safe," she says.

Catherine Bewley, from the LGBT anti-violence organisation, Galop, said all Victims deserve respect and adequate support, not condemn or blame, regardless of their gender or circumstances.

Manchester University students' union says, it is a regular drink-spiking awareness campaigns to be running sites in his game, especially during freshers' week.

What you can do to protect themselves?

Sinaga is thought to have used The Class C drug GHB, used recreationally, But can be deadly, at a slightly higher dose than he gave his Victims , But predators can also spike drinks with other illegal drugs, such as ketamine, or Rohypnol.

It is almost impossible to tell whether a drink has been spiked by The Taste or smell, although GHB can be slightly salty taste, or smell unusual.

The NHS provides some steps that may help to prevent it: offer

Some of the bars drinks' lid or plastic stopper devices, The Risk of drink-spiking. Others offer drink-Test-kits, But you won \ ' T test for each drug and do not always work.

How Big A problem is it?

While it is hard to know the true extent as incidents are often not reported, carried out last year found, there are at least 2,650 reports of drink-spiking were " in England and Wales between 2015 and 2019.

The data from 22 of the 43 police and The British Transport police showed around a quarter of The Victims were men.

Between January and September 2019, 68 cases have been recorded, what has set the total for 2019 to hit a five-year high.
