About The Wind

Lizzy is a tough, resourceful frontierswoman settling a remote stretch of land on the 19th-century American frontier. Isolated from civilization in a desolate wilderness where the wind never stops howling, she begins to sense a sinister presence that seems to be borne of the land itself, an overwhelming dread that her husband dismisses as superstition. When a newlywed couple arrive at a nearby homestead, their presence amplifies Lizzy's fears, setting into motion a shocking chain of events.

Australia fires: gum trees from the Bush fires worse?

Nov 3,2023 1:11 am

Burning eucalyptus bark can be effected by The Wind , and the spread of forest fires.

Several readers have asked if Australia helped the famous eucalyptus trees, the spread of the Bush fires that raged for months.

Also known as the rubber tree, these forests are some of The Most flammable in The World .

to propagate, such As eucalyptus trees, fires?

eucalyptus trees cover More Than three-quarters of Australia's forested area and nearly all of The Hundreds of species are native to The Island -nation.

strips of bark hanging from the trunk and branches can ignite and carry a Fire on the top of The Tree and through The Forest to The Wind

"If the bark ignites, it can be blown great distances, starting a new Fire ," says Dr. Jane Cawson, an expert in the vegetation Flammability at the University of Melbourne.

This process, called spotting, can ignite 30km (18 miles) from the fires ahead of the main Fire and is very hard to.

"tighten The trees themselves, the fires mostly through discovery," says Dr. Cawson.

Some of the gum-tree leaves contain oil that can also ignite easily and burn quickly.

There is also the vegetation on The Floor of a eucalyptus forest, the catch tends to be easy to Fire .

There are hundreds of different species of eucalyptus tree in Australia

in the course of time, they have adapted to their environment, where drought and fires are frequent, and the trees themselves are usually very resilient.

Some species have the ability to survive and Recover from Bush fires, and will soon resprout by means of buds that lie dormant in you.

Burn also triggers the seeds from their capsules, stored in The Tree crowns, which can also help the regeneration.

But new research, to Recover , if the same piece of forest burned by high intensity Fire More Than once over a short period of time, the fight to happen in Australia, even The Most stable species of eucalyptus can.

The koala's diet is based mainly on eucalyptus leaves, which Is toxic to most other animals it is an alternative to eucalyptus?

offer These natural forests, often within protected areas, a habitat for a huge number of animal and plant species.

"There is no public debate [in Australia] over the replace by other species," says Dr. Cawson.

have used the indigenous people to use The Tree for a variety of practical purposes, from crafting tools, the oil as a medicine.

But, there are discussions about How To care for the forests to prevent fires from spreading.

One of these, and it was a political row about it, to stop more of this "burn-out" as a means of fires that should have been done dissemination.

Other countries have rubber trees

The main types, which have been exported and planted widely outside of Australia, the eucalyptus globulus is.

"It's actually one of the less flammable eucalyptus trees, but it is still inflammatory a lot More Than some of the native landcover has replaced," says Stefan Doerr, an expert in forest fires at Swansea University.

the trees have contributed to The Forest fires in California and Portugal, which suffers from one of the worst fires in Europe.

The eucalyptus was considered to be one of the main reasons the fires were so deadly, in Portugal, in the year 2017. They are grown for paper in many areas of the Central and Northern parts of the country.

At the time, an environmental group, said the Fire reflected a "situation of negligence," criticized the mass replacement of pines, eucalyptus-trees.

elsewhere, eucalyptus trees are often used for afforestation and commercial purposes, because they grow quickly, despite ecologists warning can be bad for the native species.

These varieties are often bred to be more productive, and a Fire are much less of a risk, says Fang yuan Hua, a conservation ecologist based at the University of Beijing in China.

"This 'structure of agricultural holdings are usually under very careful management, the lower the risk of Fire can give you," She Said .
