About The War

Six years in the making, Ken Burns' seven-part documentary series chronicles the horrifying historical impact of World War II from an American perspective by focusing on the personal stories of private citizens from four American towns: Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama; Sacramento, California; and Luverne, Minnesota. Together, these four communities serve as a tapestry of the ordeal Americans went through during the four years of the war, as witnesses share their own vivid and often harrowing accounts of how the war dramatically altered their lives as well as those of their friends and neighbours. … MORE

"I have been For the First Time aware of the depths to which humanity can sink," says Mr Forsyth, who is now 96.

Although he was still a young man when he reaches the North of Germany, concentration camp in April 1945, he had seen a lot of action.

The 21-year-old, Lanarkshire, Hamilton in the South, fought His Way from Normandy in The Days after D-day and Germany as a tank operator with a reconnaissance Force .

Mr Forsyth was just 21 when he came to The Gates of Belsen in 1945,

When he came to The Gates of Belsen, he says, he knew nothing about what had happened to it.

"It was a strange smell about The Place ," he says. "I asked the gunner, what was The Smell . We had no idea. "

Mr Forsyth says that The Soldiers did not open was told, "the locks, do not let anyone, and do not feed".

"We have broken The Rules and thrown over some food, which I regret now, because that's what we of them, she could not rushed to eat and the folk music on the back to the front, to catch what she had thrown.

"I didn't know until a while later that these people died of Hunger, of every disease you can imagine.

"It really is a terrible nightmare that will not get rid of them. "

More Than 50 000 prisoners from all over Europe were killed or died later as a result of the treatment in The Camp .

the British troops found the 60,000 prisoners suffering from malnutrition, disease and the brutal treatment she had suffered. Thousands of bodies unburied lay on the campsite.

There was no running water in The Camp , and there were epidemics of typhus, typhoid, and tuberculosis.

Mr Forsyth says that active soldiers who had no medical experience, were in The Camp , because the people in charge were afraid of an epidemic.

Within a couple of days, his regiment moved had, but the memories of The Scene to track him to This Day .

returned As he was from The War , His Mother held him, talking about his experiences. He was not allowed to discuss it in The House .

"many a night I walked The Streets ," he says. "I couldn't stay in The House . "

"If it bottled in you, it is worse than the reality. "

"the only person who understood was My Wife , and you suffer, because she says to me," Mr Forsyth,.

But he was proud to be the liberating Force ?

"I'm not proud of it, I'm just glad that we arrived when we did," he says.

"We have to save Some People , No Question . But if you want to see The Graves of some 1,500 folk in each, rankles there. "
