Coronavirus: 'we used to have lockdown death cut in half would be great'

Nov 27,2023 8:41 am

Prof Neil Ferguson modeled the impact of the epidemic for the government of the United Kingdom

The Number of coronavirus deaths in the UK would be halved, if lockdown had been introduced a week earlier, a former government adviser has said.

Prof Neil Ferguson , whose advice was decisive for the decision to go into lockdown, said the outbreak had already doubled in size every three or four days, before measures were introduced.

In the UK, and the blocking began on the 23. March.

The Number of persons known who died with the coronavirus in Britain is 40,883.

"we Had a lockdown put in place the measures a week earlier, we would have reduced The Final number of deaths by at least half," Prof Ferguson told a Committee of MPs.

"So, while I think that the measures, in the light of what we knew to be guarantees about this virus in terms of the transfer. certainly, we had introduced you earlier, we would have seen many cases less death. "

'mistakes happen'

Prof Ferguson showed that many lives in a nursing home could have been saved.

"We have the rather optimistic assumption that somehow - the Policy - the older would be screened.

But " that does not happen simply," He Said .

Prof Ferguson said the government, the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies (Sage) had "expected In Theory ," The Risk for people in nursing homes and it was discussed in meetings as early as February.

But, the "the only way you can truly care homes to protect to do the extensive testing to ensure that it to get," He Said .

And more was to understand how The Virus is transmitted, for example, that home care often at More Than one institution, and possibly the spread of the infection between the residences, he added.

Missed models

to Discuss the timing of the blocking, mathematicians Kit Yates said there had been an "overreliance" on certain models in determining how quickly the epidemic has been doubled.

"Some members [of the pandemic modelling group] SPI-M have communicated their concerns to me that some of the modeling groups had decisions have more influence on the consensus than others," He Said .

This meant, "some opinions or assessments that are not valid passed on, up The Chain ".

on average, about 1,600 people per day die in the UK. What is not reported is known about the coronavirus deaths during the epidemic.

Most of The Victims are elderly or with underlying health conditions.

experts predict it will die is considerable overlap between the coronavirus-the dead and those who would normally be expected to.
