Remote work could change How cities, if we worked at home more

Nov 22,2023 3:21 am

The empty streets outside the New York Stock Exchange , may 19

For many of us, Our Home , our jobs in the last few months and a complete return to The Office still seems a remote prospect.

Major tech companies say they are open to working with their staff to from home, permanently. Employees come to realize that remote work is not only possible, but in some cases, even preferable. To work a shift to a new type, you may already have in progress.

Such a change could have deep areas reaching impact on Our Home life, and by extension, The Life in our cities and municipalities, with almost a quarter of all office, in England and Wales is in the centre of London Alone .

To understand the impact that we had brought, together with four experts on The Life of The City , all of which were to work from home.

The City centres empty out?

Paul Cheshire, professor of Economic Geography at the London School of Economics:

I think we go Back To The Office , but not in the same way.

People are More productive when they are closer together face-to-face contact. There are 20 years of really good, convincing studies show how important this is. There are many things that you can do, except with Other People - People are, by nature, Social Animals .

Les Back , professor of sociology at Goldsmiths:

I think We Are at a critical point. It is a realignment, a realignment of The Relationship between the time and the place and The Social life is that We Are on the threshold. We see profound changes. Some things can not come back.

Aude Bicquelet-Lock, Deputy head of policy and research, Royal Town Planning Institute:

It is true, some companies have said that they allow their employees to work from home forever. Twitter said it. Facebook said it. The Ceo of Barclays said that the commissioning of 7,000 People in The Office could be a thing of The Past .

not to go The Experience to The Office in Aberystwyth is the same as going to The Office in London. The Decline of Office Space will affect small, medium, and large cities in different ways.

files:

the erosion of city life, come for a long time. It may be that what will happen is that some companies come Back To the center of The City and think it is too risky or it can ask The Other engines of the economy, where People use only the opportunity to: "Why do we invest so much of our capital in this great Office Space ?"

I think there may be a big impact [work from home]. As the pressure on the domestic sphere. As the pressure on the gender relations in the home, on the blurring and overlapping of the parenting and the work and the pressure this would cause is.

Tverskaya street in Moscow, 9. May

Aude Bicquelet-Lock:

I think what we see is that the local centres can see More diversification - More food, More social activities, how People can want to meet each other. Also from home can mean working, getting access to jobs in the communities for a few days. Growth is expected in these areas.

The opposite of apply could be used to larger cities, which, of course, begs the question of how the Office Space can again: there are several options, such as you offices in living rooms, not always with absolute success.

I wonder also whether we need, conference rooms and other meeting rooms as we made in The Past .

Paul Cheshire

you will be More People working from home, which means there will be More demand for large houses is. You have to have a work area, the slide. You may need to move, to maybe once a week, twice a week to their headquarters, where the is, for the meetings. Therefore, you will have a longer commute to accept cheaper course. You will move tend to be further Away from the City Centre .

On The Other hand, there are People who stay in the offices that remain in the concentration, of social interaction, which will be attracted More strongly to the City Centre . But you are also likely to get localized desk-sharing, specializing in areas where People can go, if you are a home worker, where occasionally it is possible to better, or better facilities, or Away from their children. There is an opening in the smaller cities of hot-desking.

Istanbul side-street, 17 may,

We need More space. What would you do, is the opening up of land in the vicinity of the train stations with good connections to the inner cities. You could build A Million houses on green areas within 45 minutes of Central London , because there is so much green.

of The fastest growing places for commuters to London are incredibly Far Away - Peterborough , York, Somerset. People living miles Away to affordable land and More space. This will be accelerated. And it is especially accelerated, unless We Are willing to give for the release of land in proximity to transport nodes, access to jobs.

What is The Transport and The Environment ?

Margaret Bell, professor of transport and The Environment , University of Newcastle:

Our research has shown that in a study of commuting to Newcastle in the 7% of trips over 50 km were responsible for 60% of carbon dioxide emissions. The further you travel, the More adverse effect the emissions.

Paul Cheshire

This is one of the ironies of The Green belt: More forcing People to commute.

Margaret Bell

" My concern is that People will buy More cars and those cars that you will be using More . What we need are incentives to use bicycles More and to live in order to shift the People to go closer to your work or in the workplace or in the Organisation for People to work More locally.

We need to understand a bottom-up approach, the needs of the People and try and adjust transportation accordingly.

Birmingham New Street station, the 9. April,

Paul Cheshire

housing, and in particular in England, is very energy inefficient. There is already a huge carbon-footprint-with More time in the house, because At Home , the heating and the thermal insulation of houses, far, far worse than the modern business rooms.

Margaret Bell

Some of the work we have showed at Leicester that, if you work from home, on average, do not use 75% More energy than they save by coming to work. And this corresponds to a 75% increase in the carbon dioxide - Purely and simply because if you need to, heating and gas, electricity At Home , which is More Than what you save by not going to work with the car.

And so, coupled with the isolation effect, it is useful for the local businesses open up their hot-desking offices, or even on reciprocity agreements with companies in which the consultants, and The City could respond to hot-desking in The Office .

What is The Way we do cities?

Les Back :

We Are mainly talking about People who work in the financial services sector, white-collar jobs and white-collar workers. But that is not the workforce of the cities. What is with the hospital, school and other occupations in the public sector?

Also, the cities are important because they are places of encounter. Places of difference. This difference and the negotiations that happen to be about the racial and cultural difference, for certain qualities in the centre of cities, which is not equal to The Outskirts of town and in The Suburbs .

Collister Street in New York 's Tribeca district, 21. May

Aude Bicquelet have made Lock:

Each by the block and not through The Changes and new habits and have strong views about what it is you want, what works for you and what is not.

And I think that one of The First things we have to do, than listen to city planners and the policy is what you want. But it is financial constraints.

Paul Cheshire

The Other Problem is fear, People : how long does it take to recover People from The Experience of fear to be in crowds of People , vulnerable. I think that People can recover, if it's The Virus subsides a vaccine, when.

If that happens, offices are. back yourself and all those things we like to do in The City centers again, and even This can take a very long time.

Office-life for many has changed significantly. Some will choose to work More from home, while for others the shield, you have no choice in The Matter . But if space is at a premium-and the bedroom was in the work, we want to know, to come up with what life hacks you have to make The Most of the small areas they now live and work.
