Doctors and coronavirus: ‘How can we not fear?'

Nov 14,2023 7:41 pm

The Corona-Virus-pandemic a heavy toll on health workers around The World are struggling to contain it.

Many fear for their lives in the midst of limited supplies of essential protective equipment. The Virus has also changed your relationships with your patients, colleagues and families, and some are struggling under the psychological weight of The Crisis .

there are No global figures available, But country-by-country data to illustrate the risks that are faced in the treatment of patients with thousands of health professionals infected in countries such as Italy, Spain and the USA.

We spoke with five health care workers, all women, they are faced in some of The World 's most seriously affected countries about The Challenges . Some that are excluded, to speak publicly and asked to remain anonymous.

paediatric intensive care medicine, fellow in London, United Kingdom

came in Front of the coronavirus, we would see the masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) lie on each bed in our intensive care unit, But now they are Locked In , as a rule, stay in a closet, and You have to go out and get You .

I Am concerned about the risks. The Most important thing is, We Are likely to be exposed to always the A Number of times, as in contrast to the General Public , the likely exposure once. Despite the PPE, there is still A Chance that if You this process the aerosols generate, You are in danger of getting exposed and it is for us, probably several times instead of just once.

Since I was a doctor, and Live With my husband, who works in Covid-positive community, my biggest concern is that it will probably be us in each other at some point.

Psychologically, it is difficult, because the only work we do is working with high-risk, as now.

Our layers have become more frequent; we have to do more night shifts; we will work every second weekend; and all of our annual leave was cancelled. So it is hard to work before and the sad thing is that we have to get something that the stress of us, as there is no way we can relax.

You either work in a high-risk situation, and are stressed, or You are easy to do At Home nothing to do, so it will be not a nice situation that You are currently.

Sara Low, intensive care unit nurse, Seattle, US

The first few patients, we do Ebola-style. We were throwing to, with the masks, which was in the quantities, And Then realized, as we came to The End of our stocks, oh no, there are no new things to come, because the distribution is influenced, so are we climbing again, The Last bits of what we have on hand.

There was a lot of the health workforce to be sick all over The World , so I Think there are legitimate concerns.

I Am concerned for my colleagues who have weakened immune systems or underlying respiratory problems. We will do our best to keep the nurses out of The Room . I'm happy that I don't have the underlying health conditions.

I Am worried that I make it home To My husband and I have somehow. asked me if I should not move in The Guest bedroom, and try to, within six meters of him But So Far , We Are living just as normal.

We Are still going to have to sacrifice ourselves and run without a PSA. I Refuse to do that. If we don't run out of masks, I know what I'll do. It'll be a big ethical dilemma. I feel, to sacrifice my commitment To My profession not to extend My Own life and knowingly do unnecessary reckless things. My employer has a responsibility to continue the provision of protective equipment to keep nurses safe.

a nurse in Madrid, Spain

I feel happy because, at The Moment , I can wear a mask, and a new disposable gown for Every Day that I go to work (although the latter are already sterilized at the beginning).

I have to stay in the same clothes, all The Shift and protect them with a surgical mask and a semi-transparent dress, which is what we reject, if You leave The Room . Many colleagues from other departments and other hospitals do not have sometimes the and share on Social Media , such as evening dresses, and shoes are made with garbage bags and protective clothing visors with all kinds of gadgets.

We see on the night table, The Most serious consequences of this disease. How can we not afraid?

Strangely enough, when I Think the least about everything that surrounds Covid-19 is, when I'm working. I suspect this is a defense mechanism I've created to cope with this situation. I focus on the care of my patients.

When The Shift ends, this defense mechanism is "disabled" and I Think about the risks I'm exposing myself day in and day out, and I'm afraid the possibility of finding myself in The Future in the same situation of my patients are in. That this could happen to me.

After work, I'm moving everything that is in contact with The Hospital at The Entrance and go under the shower and Clean - everything Clean . I live alone, But the other members isolate themselves from their Family in their own home, because of risk of infecting You .

I watch The News and I get angry, I get depressed, I'm desperate. You listen to people, the applause from the balconies. Sometimes I cry. I don't know whether I Am grateful or frustrated. There are better and worse days. Lately it has been harder for me to sleep.

Resident Doctor in Lombardy, Italy

The Work You do in The Day is no Different .

The difference is that everything is much slower, because You have to have to dress every Time we have masks and gloves, and something about our eyes, and something like a jumpsuit.

You have to wear them all The Time . You can't remove them. So that is why we work six hours in a row and all of the six hours, we need to change. As soon as You start work, You will have to work until The End - You can't eat or go to the toilet or drink or anything else.

You can not go out to eat or to The Park . In The Hospital they can not have a coffee with colleagues. You go to work and Go Home .

The Relationship with the patient is quite Different . I used to stay a little and talk with the patients, to try to create a relationship, But now You can't. The patient can't hear, because the oxygen is very loud and also because You do not want to stay in The Room longer than You need to. In addition, it is very hot in all the plastic, You need to carry. Also, You can only with relatives on The Phone .

You feel like a doctor in times of war.

We do not have to stop a lot of Time to Think about it because we work. We Think about all this later, probably. It doesn't always happen when You Think in an emergency, You just act.

Michelle Au - a specialist in anesthesiology in Atlanta, USA

So Far , I have access to what I need every Time I care for a patient. There have been times when I have to use items again and I was worried that in The Act of receiving a possibly contaminated item and puts it back on, I'm a contamination to me.

You can not see the particles, it is not like the red color, where You would be like "oh, I have some on me." It is not spilled, there is no alarm, the. They are very concerned about is the invisible contamination and that, in fact, the attempt to do good, the harm they do.

Many health care professionals across the country begin to contract this disease, and it makes sense. We Are clearly vulnerable. And many of us, at least The People I have spoken to, in terms of not if, But when will we speak of the contract. We Are to behave, basically, with the assumption that many of us contract.

We had a last will and Testament for More Than a decade, because we have Children - it was a thing we had, just in case, there is one thing that You can do to be a responsible Adult , But I don't Think we really saw it as a real possibility Until Now . And now we have revised it.

I moved down to The Basement , so I'm separated from My Family , Separate bedroom, Separate bathroom. I'm half-quarantine my personal items, so that if I need to do the quarantine, the provisions are already in force. It is reasonably likely that, if someone comes into The Family , it comes to me.
