Coronavirus: Job-hunting advice for 2020 graduates from the class of 2008

Nov 26,2023 10:31 am

Scott Wilson-Laing his first job at the University was in a call Center. He now owns a distillery business -

graduates prior to even harsher competition for jobs this summer because of the Corona Virus pandemic.

About 400,000 students to complete their degrees in 2020 opportunities evaporate over night.

Twelve years ago, graduates faced a similar fear, when the global financial crisis threw much of The World into recession. Banks collapsed, the company went under, and millions of people lost their jobs.

But what is The Class of 2008 to teach, The Class of 2020? We asked three graduates from 2008, what advice would you give to your younger colleagues.

Lindsay Cash, 35: 'Try new things and use it to your advantage' of Lindsay moved thousands of miles from Birmingham to Australia, where she now works as an IT-Manager ,

I think I'm one of the lucky ones, the 2008.

I studied law at the University of Warwick. I finished my legal practice course (LPC), when firms started to delay contact with people who have their training contracts. My Friends and I were All In the same boat. So, when The Phone rang, I already knew what she would say. My training contract has been postponed for two years, but fortunately, the company has offered me a job as a paralegal.

a salary of About £6,000-a-year low, but I worked in insolvency and procedural law at The Time , so I was always busy.

by The Time I qualified in 2012, they were still layoffs. There were no jobs in the area that I wanted to go, so I left my Law Firm and decided to see The World . I landed in Australia, where I worked, since, first of all, in the area of Financial Services and now as commercial Director.

Lindsay Cash in the year 2008. She took a job as a paralegal, if your training contract is two years,

people pushed to have challenged me About my longevity in a job. I was asked: am I a Flight Risk ? And I'm just saying that my CV is a product of the financial crisis.

I took roles that have helped me build skills that I would use in The Future . I never sat waiting for something. And if you explain that you are in resonance with people, especially the older generation.

It is a (the co-founder of Apple), said, "You can not connect The Dots ; you can Only Connect them to the rear"

When I look back, I know that things always Work Out . But you have to regroup and say what I need to do to move forward?

Scott Wilson-Laing, 33: "and Stay positive, all the work experience Scott Wilson Laing in 2008, counts'. He worked in many different jobs, before the establishment of his own business -

I was 11 years old when I knew I wanted to be a pilot. I even thought About applying to The Royal Air Force directly after completing A-levels. But my career Advisor told me that a University would look better on the registration form. I had paid more and promoted more quickly. So I went to the University of Wales the study of Ancient History and archaeology.

by The Time I closed in the year 2008, the options were already drying out. The RAF recruitment office told me that they are not recruiting for specific roles", such as the pilots. I couldn't wait a year to re-apply, because I would be too old. I was gutted.

It was not all jobs graduate Links of where I come from in Sunderland. So I used a shotgun approach and apply to everything that is going on. At The End I have a year working in a call Center. After that, I worked in a lighthouse for six months And Then a steel factory. For Six Years I worked My Way from production to distribution and operation, before I get into IT.

I'd worked for a decade for others. I have a daughter who is 10 Years old. Little things like to ask for a vacation day, just to see, made her theatrical performance in the school me and my career rethink. So I have Set Up my experience WL Distillery in County Durham in the Last Year . We crowdfunded our first batch of premium Gin .

Scott now makes hand sanitizer for local businesses during the lockdown

And Then the pandemic hit. The Chinese factory was to make some of our equipment mothballed, so we were not able to make it, Gin . But we saw, there was a massive hand sanitizer deficiency, so we decided to our ingredients, small batches for the NHS, local schools and businesses.

My advice to high school graduates, as positive as you can and stop fixing things that don't work. I thought My Life was: go to College, get a job, stay For Life , and get a nice retirement package at The End with a clock. And this is not The World We Live in.

So be open to opportunities that you have not planned, maybe. Working in a call Center, where I learned to treat The Right way and talk with staff. It's amazing what skills you Pick Up in jobs that don't detect it once.

Harriet Nicholson, 33: "do not dismiss,-graduate-jobs", the Harriet now works for a digital consulting

I am ashamed to say, it would be now, but when I graduated, in 2008, I thought the people were throwing opportunities at me. I knew a financial crisis was going on, but I believed that The Market owed almost me a job. I had a history degree from the University of Oxford and a high was always the achiever. I also lacked humility, in a very big way.

at The Time I was on the hunt for a diploma in systems on consumer goods giants such as Unilever and Reckitt Benckiser . Not if I get anywhere, I began to advertising agencies and large retailers such as Tesco. I think I filled in About 110 applications. I have About five interviews.

Harriet Nicholson in the year 2008. She worked as a receptionist, if she could not get on any graduate schemes

After four months of seeking and show no job for you, I ended up moving back to Southampton, where I took a job as a medical receptionist.

I felt embarrassed and had lost confidence. This job is not made clear to me, I was as good as I thought I was. So many of the people I worked with was able To My job better than I do.

After that, I got an internship at Oxfam. This Was helpful, because I have a lot of contacts and eventually a Master's degree in management. This has led me to the career I am in now, which led To My current job at a digital consultancy. It is also where I met my husband!

In retrospect, I considered graduate programs in really high esteem, which was actually a bit silly. For example, if I was not successful in the case of Unilever, I just gave up. I don't get About the search for an entry-level job, a foot in The Door .

I would say to recent graduates: do not Be Afraid to ask for help, and take advantage of the things that you take for granted. Back in 2008, we were entering on the labour market, as the early users of Facebook and Twitter, so we were able to educate companies How To use these platforms.

today, companies are not still trying to find out, TikTok, so do not underestimate The Power of your digital Knowledge .
