Beales chief: "councils really don T care'

Apr 27,2023 2:40 am

councils "really don ' T care" about the support of High-Street trade, the head of the struggling Department Store chain Beales has said the BBC.

Beales, which began trading in Bournemouth in 1881, has warned that

The Company operates 22 branches throughout the UK and over 1,000 jobs in the game.

"We have only managed a Council, to help us on a temporary basis," Beales boss Tony Brown of the BBC, said Today program.

"at the moment, in my opinion, not the councils really care. You can get your business rates, regardless of whether we are there or not, because The Landlord is paying, when the store closes. "

Mr Brown said that his current focus was trying to secure a "profitable future" for the purchase of the house. Several options are being examined, including the search for a buyer, negotiating rent reductions with landlords and the restructuring of the economy by the closure of some branches.

"In the cities in which we act, we are the retail heart of the city centre," he said.

He stressed that the landlords were "mostly" helpful and was able to see a long term future for The Business , but he felt let down by the local and Central government.

"For example, in many of our stores, I'll pay three or four times more business rates than rent. Now, that can't be right," he said.

He added that "The Sheer weight of the additional costs that piled up for us - if you increase The Pension , take prices, make changes in the way that we can apply for a loan - it is a coordinated effort, or what feels like it, as hard as possible [of trading on The High street]. "

In the Year to March 2019, Beales a loss of £3 is reported. 1m, compared with a loss of £1. 3m for the previous Year , as costs rose and sales plunged.

Fighting-sector

Beales is by no means the only High-Street-fighting chain.

last week, The British Retail Consortium said that UK retail sales fell 0. 1% in the last Year , on the occasion of The First annual sales drop since 1995.

He added that sales in November and December were particularly weak, falling 0. 9%.

last week, the John Lewis Partnership reporting saw a Fall In festive sales at its Department Store chain. He warned that his employee bonus can be withdrawn in case of doubt as to the profits expected to be "substantially below the previous Year ".
