Easton Bavents: Farmer ' s cliff-top cottage to be demolished

Nov 17,2023 2:11 pm

The pink house you see on The Left -hand side in the year 1998, in The Middle of the year 2009 and on The Right side in December 2019, when it teetered on The Edge of the cliff

A farmer is "devastated" to leave after they forced their cliff-top cottage, as it fell into The Sea .

Anne Jones, had The Family in the possession of the property in Easton Bavents near Southwold in Suffolk since 1925.

A storm destroyed a large part of the cliff in December, to leave The Building , 30ft (9m) from The Edge .

It has been since demolished, over several weeks, after which it is considered unsafe, the engineers, and the rocks eroded by another 10ft (3m).

"The whole family is very sad, My Father used to go down once on the track, because he can't bear to look at it. There is so much history there and we have rented it to so many people over The Years ," said Mrs Jones.

"It's pretty depressing, it makes me angry. It feels so unfair that we have lost hundreds of acres of land, and we must accept it, where as the wealthy get to populated areas to be Protected . "

Anne Jones was told, on a cliff, The House would be demolished because it was unsafe The demolition took several weeks, because The Family wanted to keep and sell some of the stones to a small part of their losses By the time The House was demolished, it was only 20ft (6m) from The Edge of the cliff,

Easton Bavents was once a thriving village and England's most easterly point. The Church disappeared in The Sea in the 17Th Century , and much of the surrounding land was worn away.

Mrs Jones, great-grandfather of Herbert Boggis used his savings to buy the 400-acre estate in 1925, but it is now less than half that size.

in The Past two decades has The House crept closer to the Cliff Edge due to erosion.

Julia Blaxland rented part of the property, which consists of three row houses, owned by The Family since the age of 12. She was asked to get out just before Christmas.

The Author who wrote a book, lived through their time there, said she was very sad to see The House reduced and it was "a great loss" to The Farm .

The House in Easton Bavents is now rubble

Peter Boggis, who is Mrs Jones, the mother of the cousin, started building his own sea defences to protect almost 20 years ago to the area, but after losing a court dispute. to help

A, which was approved in 2012, to move, has not been worked and landowners are left to fend for themselves, Mrs. Jones said.

A spokesman for East Suffolk Council, which is part of the coastal partnership Eastern group, manages the coast in the area, said it had worked "Hard . with owners in Easton Bavents in The Last 10 Years to try and find ways to alleviate the challenges, you lose your property to The Sea ".

He added that it helps those who lose their property to build erosion with a planning elsewhere in The District .
