Coronavirus: English councils could resort to "extreme cost-cutting'

Nov 17,2023 1:21 am

Local councils in England are "extremely worried" they will be more resources to combat coronavirus.

The Local Government Association's Richard Watts has Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick warning of "extreme cost-cutting written".

In his letter, The Bbc , Mr Watts argues for a guarantee of the government "to still do what it takes" to help you.

An additional £1. 6bn The Local authorities, since the outbreak began in has been given.

A spokesman from the Ministry of housing, communities and Local government, said Mr Jenrick, "it was clear that [it] is the support of the councils, the services for their communities during the pandemic".

the councils of their revenue from fees and prices face increased costs from the support of disadvantaged people, during the decline.

Mr Watts - the LGA-resource-Chairman - began his letter with a word of thanks to the minister for his "Hard Work in the name of The Local government", and said the measures, including the £1. 6bn financing, and deferral of business rates, payments, to be "helpful in providing stability and security".

But He Said the Bar was had heard of an "inadequate amount" and the members of the LGA, from The Department , that "the further promotion in prospect, in spite of previous promises."

He wrote: "This confidence has a real impact on the councils that they have the financial resources to see this challenge and could lead to some extreme cost-cutting and rationing measures. "

Mr Watts said he had. evidence seen in some of the social support, the authorities had already committed, up to Three Times more expenditure than the grant allocation allowed, because they expect additional funds, and the money put was "negligible" in comparison to what you must spend on increased homelessness

He also claimed that the financial heads of the councils are already in possession off display of reports, showing that you are "spending [their] funds" because of the promises of additional resources.

Mr Watts said there was pressure, it would blow up the framework, Corona-Virus outbreak, such as an increased need for social care and Council tax support.

He Said the "income base is collapsing" for councils, leisure centres closed, Public Transport is cut and the Park fees in the coming, as well as lower business rates collected.

"This loss of income represents a real reduction in resources available to councils to fund services, and means that, in The Absence of compensation, the balanced budgets set by councils will be available," wrote Mr Watt.

He Said the "focus point" for the government should be ensuring The Local authorities, "trust, the government will support you".

Mr Watts concluded his letter and says: "We want to urge you, and the Chancellor of the exchequer, in a clear Memorandum of understanding, the willing to do the government what it needs, and additional resources to the councils at the front. "

And he called for a "commitment to compensate for the [councils] for the costs, the net loss of income and savings not delivered can be as a result of this crisis, so that they can continue to focus on providing the answer to the biggest challenge, the UK and The World have seen in decades, in contrast to thoughts about whether or not you need to have to start rationing, since there is no more support, maybe soon".

The government has already said, keep it to Review the financing for the municipalities.
