British EU exit: to agree on EU-UK trade talks mandate

Aug 29,2023 12:51 am

Ministers from the EU will meet later to approve the mandate for post-Brexit free trade with the United Kingdom.

The document approved by the EU Council for General Affairs on Tuesday morning is to be the basis for future negotiations, Michel Barnier .

He is saying that a trade deal should be on the basis of the EU legislation in some areas as a "Reference Point ".

Meanwhile, British Ministers meet at No 10 to discuss the government's opening position for negotiations.

The Final Agreement is due to be published online and presented in Parliament on Thursday.

the BBC Brussels correspondent Adam Fleming said the EU document is important, "because, experience shows, will accept the EU only, a final Agreement with the UK on trade, security and other matters that comes close to the conditions laid down in it".

For a free-trade Agreement , the EU will demand measures to guarantee fair economic competition.

In the international taxation, environmental and labour law that would mean common standards over time, with the EU Rules as a "Reference Point ".

It also means that the EU wants to still apply the state aid Rules for companies - the so-called state aid, in the UK, Whatever Happens , has already been rejected by Boris Johnson .

It is expected to commit Ministers in the UK, the search with zero customs duties, a proposal from Mr. Johnson and his Europe-Advisor David Frost in the last few weeks.

But the push for a Canada-style deal could be excluded for the establishment of a clash with the EU, according to its chief negotiator, Mr Barnier, a such an Agreement .

Mr Barnier has previously said the UK is to close in the vicinity, be allowed, in competition with The Other 27 EU States, on such terms.

The EU chief negotiator, Michel Barnier , is in talks with Britain about The Future of trade relations

the Prime Minister , The official spokesperson of lead asked about the trade talks on Monday, said: "the UK is the Supreme goal of the negotiations is to ensure that we are back in our economic and political independence on 1. January 2021. "

Mr Frost and his team in the direction of Brussels for The First round of negotiations on the 2. March.

A collision is expected, that with the upcoming publication of the EU negotiating mandate on the fish catch, the continue, with the leading member States speak regularly about the desire to have access to British waters.

In a speech in Greenwich, south-east London, earlier this month, Mr Johnson announced that as soon as you are free of the EU's Common fisheries policy, "British fishing grounds primarily for British boats".

But the French Europe minister, Amelie de Montchalin signals a flash-point would be fishing, if the two negotiating teams come together in London and Brussels in the coming months.

"The Fishermen have The Right to be protected, you know very well that, if we are to be sign of a bad business, you lose enormously," she told the TV station France 2 .

A leaked draft of the EU negotiating mandate last week, is also a condition that the United Kingdom should be the "return of unlawfully cultural goods to their countries of origin".

The Passage is meant to refer to the Elgin Marbles, ancient Greek sculptures, taken to Britain More Than 200 years ago and is now on display in The British Museum.

Downing Street has insisted The Future of The Marbles "is not up for discussion as part of our trade negotiations."

The watch is expected that the Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian leaders Brief No 10 on Tuesday as part of its diplomatic efforts with the EU before talks begin.

On Monday, Mr Johnson talks with his Croatian counterpart discussed Andrej Plenkovic , whose country holds the rotating presidency of The Council of the European Union .

Downing Street said the PM highlighted that the UK was "not looking for a specific or tailor-made Agreement , but rather a as the taken by the EU with other friendly countries such as Canada".

The No 10 spokesman added: "He stressed that the United Kingdom is not an extension of the transition period, or do not accept the agreements, the child among us, to the EU-regulations. "

The transition period will run until 31 December 2020, during which time the UK will continue to follow the EU Rules - including the freedom of movement.

It should have enough some time for the UK and the EU on a post-Brexit trade Agreement .
