The UK-born children of migrants feel themselves more discriminated against than foreign migrants

Apr 4,2023 8:30 pm

people born to migrants in the UK, parents are More likely to be discriminated against the opinion as a migrant, which suggests new in the United Kingdom, research.

the evidence of two in 2018, surveys points to ethnicity at the root of any perceived discrimination rather than a person's status as a migrant.

Among the immigrants say More Than 70%, that the UK is welcoming, and 90% believe that migrants are able to make it, if you work hard.

But More non-EU migrants feel they face prejudice than those from Europe.

The University of Oxford Migration Observatory briefing, migrants, and discrimination in the UK, based on data provisions in the European Social Survey and the United Kingdom longevity budget-study (40,000 households) in the year 2018.

Among the predominantly white migrants from the EU, only 8% say they feel that they are discriminated against, in Britain, to say while those who are from outside the EU, More Than twice as likely to be, they were part of a group that are discriminated against, at 19%.

For second-generation immigrants, born in the UK, the feeling to be discriminated against, increased by 30%.

Dr. Marina Fernandez-Reino, a researcher at the Migration Observatory and author of the briefing, described the reasons behind the perceived hostility as a "complex".

"Some UK-born minorities actually have worse results than migrants, such as higher unemployment," She Said .

"the research also suggests that children of migrants who were born and raised here, have higher expectations and are More sensitive to inequality or unequal treatment that they encounter.

"in contrast, people who are here moved, can compare their experiences to life in their country of origin and feel that you have benefited from Moving - even if they still have some drawbacks. "

Oxford Migration Observatory research on attitudes to immigration More Than a third of Britons do not want Nigerians or Pakistanis would come to the United Kingdom, but only one out of 10 would want to stop those from culturally close countries, such as Australia.

EU migrants have traditionally had less experiences of discrimination reported as those born outside the EU.

However, there was a spike in The Number of EU migrants have reported discrimination in the time of the EU referendum in the year 2016 - More Than double The Levels seen in 2010-12, or later, in the year 2018.

in addition, data for 2016-2018 shows EU migrants in Britain were rather of the opinion that, in the face of discrimination (14%) than the EU migrants in other EU countries (9%).

in contrast, The Perception of discrimination of non-EU migrants, a slightly smaller in the UK than in the rest of the EU.

The latest data indicate, attitudes to immigration in the UK, soft back in 2016.

"The increase in the EU-migrants' perception of discrimination around the time of the referendum is likely to be in the context of public debate in this period," said Dr. Fernandez Reino.

"EU-migration was one of The Top issues on the British political agenda in the run-up to the 2016 vote, but less attention has received since. "
