As the ice melts, Greenland sees its future

Jan 2,2022 6:12 am

Greenland itself, the thrust has been in the headlines is not to be used around The World

Greenland to be the center of attention, but in the last year, The Front pages of Newspapers and from around The World .

It came after US President Donald Trump confirmed news reports that he wanted the US to the purchase of the vast Arctic island of Denmark.

The Danish government immediately replied that Greenland was offered for sale, and it led to a diplomatic spat. Denmark's Prime Minister , Mette Frederiksen , called the request "absurd" for Mr Trump.

The Two Sides soon patched up their differences, however, and the United States announced a policy, its presence and influence in Greenland - it is used to open a Consulate, later this year. It will be the First In the Region since 1953, although the U.S. will continue on a military facility in the North of Greenland - Thule Air Base.

Come, China is also interested in closer economic relations with Greenland , The Island , the demand is all of a sudden? And what is the new U.S. mean Consulate, both for the Greenlandic economy, and The Territory , the independence of the Movement ?

President Trump will not respond well at first to be dismissed to Greenland from Denmark

But first, a short guide. Nine times larger than the United Kingdom, it is The World 's largest island if Australia as a continent. Located mostly within the Arctic Circle , about three-quarters of the country is permanently covered with a layer of ice.

With a population of about 56,000, is the least densely populated country or area on the earth. It makes the likes of Namibia and Mongolia seems to be a bit busy. A third of the population lives in the capital Nuuk, and there are no roads to other towns that hug the coast. Instead, you will need to fly to or boat, both of which are often not possible during the winter.

owned by Denmark since 1814, Greenland is an Autonomous territory with its own Parliament, is taking care of the domestic Affairs. The Danish Parliament in Copenhagen, of Greenland and two members, care for their international Affairs.

Currently, Greenland 's economy is dependent on two things, the Fishing industry, which accounts for 95% of exports and an annual subsidy from the Danish government. This Grant Totals 3. 9bn Danish kroner ($600m; £450m), and provides More Than half of the annual budget of the government of Greenland .

commentators say that there are two reasons why Greenland is now, and, of course, particularly from the United States and China - the economic and strategic. And both are in the context of Climate Change .

A third of the Greenlanders living in the capital Nuuk

Economically, Greenland has some of the largest deposits of the so-called rare earths, such as neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium and terbium. These are increasingly used in the manufacture of mobile phones, computers, and electric cars. And strategically, the country lies between North America , Europe, and Russia.

Climate Change , and specifically warmer temperatures mean that it might become easier, both for me of these metals, and navigate through the surrounding Arctic Ocean in a freighter or a military ship.

the Danish geologist Minik Rosing says that Greenland still lie many more treasures under the surface.

"It is also Iron Ore . it is a ruby-mine. it is Gold . it is platinum," he says. "And the Climate Change makes the driving much easier for [Greenland ]. "

But he warns that the long Arctic Winter is limited, but a strong mining industry in Greenland . "You can only do prospecting work for a mine in Greenland in the summer for three months, a year or so.

"this means That the Time , if you find, a happen, to you can get a decent mine have the production, it takes a very long Time . "

the biggest industry

Greenland is Fishing rather than the economic reasons, Mr Rosing thinks of US is Greenland considered due to its growing strategic importance. "I think that most of the US interest rates is due to strategic reasons, they just want to be present," he says. "The minerals play a minor role. "

While the Danish government declined to comment for this article, the opposition Danish MP Soren Espersen says he is concerned that the U. S. Consulate in Greenland increased calls in Greenland for independence.

Currently, surveys on the subject are inconclusive, with some suggesting that More Than 64% of the Greenlanders want to separate the country from Denmark, while others have it as low as 38%.

world trade

More from the

"The Americans should be prepared, if Greenland declares independence," says Mr. Espersen of the right-wing populist Danish people's party. "The Americans are adding fuel to the Greenlandic desire of independence. "

He adds that he wants to see the Danish government to do more to show that it is "serious" about holding of Greenland .

Soren Espersen wants to keep the Danish government, Greenland and in the folds of the

- Mr. Espersen also don't want to influence, to see China or the presence in Greenland . The Danish government seems to be in agreement, and in the year 2017, agreed to the construction of two new airports in Greenland instead of the business to a Chinese company.

Aaja Chemnitz Larsen is one of the two MPs from Greenland , the seats in the Danish Parliament. It is from the pro-independence and socialist Inuit Ataqatigiit party.

While she says: "it is good to have a good cooperation with The Americans ", she is worried about how many employees can the Consulate in the USA.

"I'm worried, because there are probably more American diplomats in the Consulate, as we are employees in the Greenland -Foreign Directorate. "Your concern is dominant to that The American presence could. "We could run," she says. The U. S. Embassy in Copenhagen, not to requests for a comment.

Greenland politicians Aaja Chemnitz Larsen is concerned about the next stage of the U.S. presence in Greenland

Ms Chemnitz Larsen adds that during the period of independence for Greenland is not your long-term goal, "I believe it is just around The Corner .

"[And] I'm not of the opinion that we should be the ones that pay too much to sell us, whether it is the United States or China, from the unity of the [Danish] Kingdom. This is not independence. "

the Danish economist Uffe Palludan agree that the Greenlanders should be US to a lot of American or Chinese investments. "It would have a major destabilizing impact on the Greenland society," he says.
