Retired Pope Benedict warns Pope Francis before the relaxation of priestly celibacy rules

Nov 17,2021 12:07 am

Pope Benedict (R), who retired in 2013, said he could not be silent on the question of priestly celibacy

Emeritus Pope Benedict has issued XVI, a defense of priestly celibacy in the Catholic Church as his successor to serve easing of a ban on Married men as priests.

Pope Benedict made The Appeal in a book as co-author with cardinal Robert Sarah .

It is a response to a proposal that Married men be ordained as a priest in the Amazon region.

Pope Benedict, who retired in 2013, said he could not be silent about the Problem.

In the book, Pope Benedict says, the vow of celibacy, a centuries-old tradition in The Church , has "great significance", because it focus the priests on their duties.

The 92-year-old says: "it does not seem possible to detect, both of these vocations [priesthood and marriage] at the same time".

It is rare for Pope Benedict, The First Pope to resign in almost 600 years, to intervene in Church Affairs.

The Vatican is yet to comment about the book before its full publication on Monday.

the Vatican commentators reacted with surprise to Benedict's intervention, suggesting it breaks with the Convention.

"not Benedict XVI to truly break his silence, because he (and his entourage) never feel, to promise bound. But this is a serious violation"

The comments of Pope Benedict were described as "incredible" by Joshua McElwee, a journalist for The National Catholic Reporter.

A theological conservative with traditional views on the Catholic values, citing poor health.

since then, But he has his views in articles, books and interviews for a different approach to Pope Francis , who is considered to be advanced. Pope Benedict is still alive within the walls of the Vatican in a former monastery.

What is the proposed change to priestly celibacy is?

In October, Catholic bishops from around The World met for a meeting known as the Synod for the debate on The Future of The Church in the Amazon.

at the conclusion of the meeting, a document about the Affairs, which was released to The Church . In it, there is a proposal that is to be ordained in the remote parts of the Amazon, older, Married men.

South American bishops, in favour of this in an effort to address the lack of priests in the region.

Pope Francis will hold it, together with many other proposals, including The Environment and The Role of women in The Church . It is expected that a decision on The Matter within the next couple of months.

There are already some exceptions, like the priests in the Eastern Catholic churches and Anglican priests who convert.

Why is it controversial?

was introduced in the Priestly celibacy, about 900 years ago. Before then, the clergy were not Married often - that priestly celibacy is explicitly required by The Bible , but an order is required by The Church .

For many, celibacy is an important part of being a Catholic priest, to devote the, allegedly, to The Church and not be distracted by what some consider to be the worldly Affairs, like a wife or A Family .

For traditionalists, this is about the direction that Pope Francis brings to The Church .

Some critics of the idea of allowing Married priests in the Amazon as a pretext for the abolition of celibacy as a prerequisite altogether.

Benedict takes his moment,

Martin Bashir , the BBC's Religion Editor

Though he vowed to remain "hidden" after his sudden retirement in 2013, it is difficult, in terms of the former Pope Benedict XVI intervention by Benedict as a strategically timed appeal to Pope Francis to change The Rules on celibacy leave.

This is also a conflict between the old belief that celibacy is exemplified in The Life of Christ and the service of the Apostle Paul wrote in his First letter to the Corinthians that "I wish all people were Like Me ," and the requirements of a modern Church that grows around the Amazon region, where there is a shortage of priests.

The Vatican has offered No Comment on the book yet, if the Pope react to Francis could be to The Proposal .

But has indicated Pope Francis , by Papal visits, and his appointment of cardinals, that he recognizes where The Roman Catholic Church to grow and to respond to their needs.

to accept His decision, the Amazon bishops request is therefore expected with voltage, and is expected to be in the next few weeks

What is The Relationship between the two popes is?

When Pope Benedict resigned in 2013, it was the First Time in 600 years that the Catholic Church won two living popes.

Since then, Benedict has largely been silent on issues of faith, but also differences between the two popes approaches emerged, with Pope Francis ' image as a reformer, in contrast with the more traditionalist elements within The Church .

The First major change came when Pope Benedict wrote a letter, and in the last year, the debt of The Church sexual abuse scandal on the sexual revolution of the 1960s, in direct contrast to Francis' public attitude.

on a smaller scale, Francis has rejected A Number of traditions, like its predecessors, the famous red shoes.

the Public interest in The Relationship between the two men awakened recently with Netflix, the release of The Two popes, in a leading role: Anthony Hopkins , Jonathan Pryce , in December.

While the poster says the film was inspired "by true events", some of the scenes - as the two men watch Football - not take place and it is unclear how close their relationship in Real Life .
