Oct 18,2022 4:41 am

A protester in Tehran holds up a picture of one of The Victims of the Ukrainian plane crash

It's anti-government protests in the Iranian capital city of Tehran and other cities after the Iranian authorities said they had "accidentally" shot down by a Ukraine International Airlines plane.

Some of the protesters have been heard shouting slogans against the leadership.

So, how strong is the opposition in Iran , and what do the protesters is?

Who are you protesting against?

annoyed The masses on The Streets in the last few days have been concentrated in Tehran and other cities such as Isfahan, and consists primarily of students and people from The Middle class, by the death of those on the plane.

The Authorities have not condemned have to say, first of all, The Truth . But slogans I have also heard, against the Supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, and the Islamic regime.

"Many of you will have known, people at this level, they Like to travel for students who can afford abroad", says the BBC's Rana Rahimpour .

There is little sign that these protests the concentration of a particular personality. "It's hard to say, there is a single figurehead now, that the people stand together," said Fatemeh Shams, an Iranian professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

What is allowed is the political opposition?

Iran 's system allows it to work elections, but also political groups, within the strict limits set by the Islamic Republic .

In the 2016 parliamentary elections, which vets them for their commitment to Iran 's Islamic system.

And for this year's parliamentary elections, which were expected to be disqualified, held in February, thousands of potential candidates, including 90 current legislators.

candidates from groups that want to against the Islamic Republic , or, change the existing system as a whole, may not be executed.

Ayatollah Khamenei sits at The Top of the Islamic Republic , the political structure

The Council of guardians can bar any would-be adopted presidential candidate, and veto any legislation by Parliament, if it is in contradiction to the Iranian Constitution and Islamic law.

Ayatollah Khamenei, is positioned at The Top of the Iranian political power structure, appoints half of The Members of this body.

The Supreme leader controls The Armed forces and decides On Security , defence and major foreign policy issues.

So in practice, The President and the Parliament in Iran , even if you change the support - have only limited powers.

There is also opposition movements, who want more autonomy for the Ethnic Minorities such as the Kurds, Arabs, Baluchis and Azeris.

Some of these groups - such as the Democratic Party of Kurdistan are to be armed and fought for decades against the Iranian state.

Does the opposition have the heads of state and government?

It was pushing a movement to reform in Iran for years, with Mohammad Khatami , the former President, as its figurehead.

In the office from 1997 to 2005, Mr. Khatami has brought in limited social and economic reforms, and put out feelers to the Western countries.

extensive changes, however, were blocked by the conservative interests, and Mr Khatami was pushed into the background with his movements and access to the media restricted.

protests in 2009 turned into a major challenge for The Regime

In 2009, a major challenge for The Regime , it came after a disputed presidential election, won by hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad .

Defeated candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi challenged the result and was leader of the so-called Green movement. Millions took to The Streets in a repeat of the election, but Ayatollah Khamenei calling insisted the result was valid.

crackdown on protests

It was a widespread crackdown on protesters this year, and dozens of opposition supporters were reportedly killed. Many of The Top opposition arrested. Mr Mousavi and Mr Karroubi still under House Arrest for More Than a decade later.

recently, there were protests by the end of 2017 and beginning of 2018 over worsening economic conditions.

the High level of unemployment in some parts of the country, the relatively young population was hit particularly hard.

The wealthy bourgeoisie also joined these protests against the handling of the economy by the government of President Hassan Rouhani as a moderate.

the participants shouted slogans against the ruling, and, overthrown, in 1979.

protests back in November of 2019, after the government has announced that it was raising gasoline prices by 50% to cope with how they fought with economic sanctions by the United States if it abandoned nuclear deal last year.

The unrest, the bloody crackdown prompted by the security forces.

Amnesty International said More Than 304 people were killed, but a Reuters news Agency report put the Death Toll at 1500. The Iranian authorities rejected both numbers. An internet shutdown took about Five Days , virtually cutting the country.

A feature of the recent protests is that they are often leaderless, and fueled by down-to-earth anger over inflation, unemployment and increased inequality.

despite the outbreaks of unrest, the government has managed to remain in control, using a combination of strong restriction of the opposition and repressive measures.
