The teachers have worked long hours for many years

May 22,2023 12:10 pm

teachers in England have worked long Hours - an average of from 46 to 49 Hours a week - for many years, the research finds.

The University College of London, found primary and secondary teachers ' Hours remained "relatively stable" in the last 25 years.

The researchers say this means that the reduction in teachers ' Hours will be difficult and may require "radical steps".

they also say that long working Hours is probably not the sole Problem in the problem of teacher retention.

The UCL researchers examined data from More Than 40,000 primary and secondary teachers in England, took part in four different surveys between 1992 and 2017.

their analysis found:

The Report comes to the conclusion that "in five years of policy initiatives, which have proven to be realized by three separate secretaries of state for Education - yet that is not enough for achieving a reduction in the total number of Hours worked by teachers.

"the reduction of working Hours , it is in accordance with the international standards, therefore, probably an additional, more radical measures on the part of the policy.

"in fact, our research shows that the working Hours at the current high level for many years, suggesting to move that you might be more difficult than previously expected. "

The UCL study also says: "These results suggest that the work load can be given excessive emphasis in The Debate about teacher retention.

"the policy would therefore be better to focus on other, better approaches to improve retention, such as increasing teacher pay, improving school management and the improvement of working conditions. "

Katie 's story

For Katie Evans, a primary school teacher for four years, the results of The Report come as no surprise.

"I would work on spending 50 or 60 Hours a week to work with in the school, And Then extra at home," says Katie .

"I would be in school not later 0730 and I would be generally there until 5 PM or 6 PM And Then I would be home for at least two Hours of marking and planning for the next day and I would still try to catch up on the weekend.

"It was depressing. It got to The Point where I thought, 'I can'. "

It was this lack of work-life balance, as well as a lack of flexibility, once you give up your first child to decide which led Katie to teach.

What do the researchers say?

The Report 's Lead author, Professor John Jerrim from the UCL Institute of Education , said: "Successive secretaries of state for Education have large obligations with teachers about their work and how they are determined, reduce The Burden of unnecessary tasks, and how to monitor these Hours robust.

"Our data show how difficult it is to reduce teacher workload and working Hours .

"We would like to see much closer monitoring of teachers' working time, so that the influence of the policy can be evaluated as soon as possible.

"Overall, bolder plans are necessary to show the government that you are serious about the reduction of working time for teachers and bring them in line with other countries. "

Josh Hillman, Director of Education at the Nuffield Foundation , which funded The Report , added: "for teachers" working time is the key for improving the quality of teaching and care.

"Take a wider view of the health of The Teacher in the last 25 years, the next phase of The Project will help us to gain a better understanding for the training of teachers. "

What do the government say?

A spokeswoman for The Department for Education said it was driven for "a concerted effort" to reduce workload of unnecessary tasks.

"And we will continue to do our work with the industry to travel down on these onerous tasks outside of the classroom, so that teachers are free to what they do Best - teach. "

the salaries for new teachers were also expected to increase to £30,000, which by the 2022-23, she added.
