Sajid Javid: the Plan for the elimination of consultants not in the "national interest"

Nov 8,2023 12:41 pm

Sajid Javid said his resignation as Chancellor was necessary to the preservation of the "national Interest " and meaningful "checks and balances" in the government.

He left the Cabinet of the Prime Minister Ministerial government reshuffle after a row over his advisers.

In a personal statement to The House of Commons explaining his decision, he defended the Treasury's independence and said it must be able to speak "truth to power".

He warned not to leave the government, its budgetary discipline.

He offered his full support to Boris Johnson , and his successor as Chancellor, Rishi Sunak , who looked, as Mr Javid delivered a rare personal statement, stating the reasons for his surprise exit last month.

But in A Warning to the PM, he said Mr Sunak, who is the Budget in Two Weeks Time should be given the "space to do his job without fear or favor".

Mr Javid, after just over six months in the treasure chamber after being told by the PM he would have his share of the team of recruitment consultants with No 10 and that some of its existing employees to Let Go , to create as part of the plans unit.

Speaking in The Commons , he said that it is "always the case" that the Minister be appointed your own consultant, and he saw no reason why the Treasury" should be The Exception ".

the Convention that The "advisers advise, decide, the Minister, and the Minister decide on their advisers" remained a sound, he told MPs.

'Best ideas'

he said he felt the command to fire, his aides would "hamper significantly" the flow of Good Advice and would not be in The National Interest as a "no particular person" has a "monopoly on The Best ideas".

He said, the mutual trust and the creative tension between the institutions were essential to the proper functioning of the government.

"It is through these audits and inspections of credible institutions-the Ministry of Finance, The Bank of England, The Office for Budget Responsibility, and this House that we get sensible decisions in The National Interest ," he said.

The PM and his Chancellor were in The Chamber to hear Mr Javid, the statement

"A Chancellor, as with all Minister, and to give you honest advice, a Prime Minister , he speaks the truth to power. I think that The Arrangement of the proposed way to inhibit significantly, and it would not be in The National Interest . "

He also made a joke at the expense of the PM's chief adviser, Dominic Cummings , who was widely seen as behind The Plan to clip Treasury wings. He told deputies he did not want to go in the "Cummings and goings" of the series, which led to his departure.

While the "persistently and energetically," the Prime Minister is a once in A Generation opportunity to renew and transform the country, he said, the government needs to live within your means.

As a "low-tax Conservative," he said, he was concerned that the tax burden is already at the highest for many years.

in the Midst of warnings from a leading economic think-tank, the IFS, he said: "not everyone in the center of the government" feels the same pressure to balance The Books and the Treasury had a responsibility to the expenditure and the public debt "under control".

"Trade-offs have to be made somewhere. If we need to do much more to Level Up over generations, would it not be correct, you pass The Bill for our day-to-day consumption to Our Children and grandchildren.

Respond immediately to Mr Javid's comments, the PM praised Mr Javid ' s "huge service" to the country and said that he had "friends and admirers" on The House .
