Criminals on Netflix: the limitations of The film and TV limited to a place
David Tennant guest stars in the opening episode of the Netflix-Criminal
Unusually for A Crime drama, there are no car chases, shootouts, explosions, kidnappings, or violent attacks in the Netflix Criminal. Well, not on the screen anyway.
The series is set almost entirely in a police interview Room , where suspects (played by a guest actor like David Tennant , and Hayley Atwell ) will be interviewed as detectives try to determine whether or not guilt or innocence.
Without shown, the crimes in question, our opinions are formed as a spectator, which is to say purely on the basis of what The Suspects and how they behave in their interviews.
The only two other places, the Criminals are the adjacent observation Room , where the police can observe what is going on on The Other side of a two-way mirror, and an area outside, where The Detectives drink a coffee on their breaks.
"We were really excited about this restriction," says George Kay , the showrunner and writer on Criminal. "Because I think That without a grand, you don't need More Than three rooms in any kind of drama.
Jim Field Smith (far right) is one of the showrunners and Directors to Criminal"You've got The Action , the observation Room Next Door , and a third Room , we always had an unofficial rule, where the people would tell The Truth or take a breather, the kind of downtime Space .
"I always had The Feeling That I never had to find another Room - there's always a solution found in the next Room together. And so we are only on the Rotation, the characters and their situation, And Then complicate it. "
Often, a TV series take advantage of a changing backdrop as a way to keep viewers engaged.
a Political drama The West Wing, which was in the dark and gloomy halls of the White house, famous for its so-called "walk and talk" scenes, where the key conversations between the characters would walk through the halls, between sessions.
The busy backgrounds That contributed to the viewers engaged, in the scenes where the characters were sometimes the more mundane elements of the state legislation to discuss.
But if you can use the restriction of its action to a single location, there are certain tactics, writer and Director.
Each set of films Tom Hardy in Locke (top left), Robert Redford in All Is Lost (top right), Ryan Reynolds in BuriedThe BFI also highlights 12 Angry Men, Tape, autumn almanac, Shirin and Alfred Hitchcock 's Rope in
Speaking of Buried: "The biggest fear I had going was That I had to make a Film, in the vicinity. You may not be in the vicinity.
"We can't cut to an outside Central Park , we can cut to another actor, we can't cut to the people I'm in conversation. It presents a really unique opportunity, but it was also a big challenge, and the full spectrum of human emotions in full close-up and really have no gimmicks or tricks. "
Katherine Kelly , who plays one of The Detectives in criminal, says she found it to be "liberating", hemmed in by a setting.
"There is a lot of responsibility on The Actors , because there is nothing to hide behind," says Kelly, known for Coronation Street and Mr Selfridge .
Criminals Katherine Kelly previously played Becky Granger in Coronation Street"It's a big explosion or a car chase or similar. I enjoy That in the same way That I suspect a professional sports man or woman, would have the desire, when It Comes to The Game . You have all done this practice for years and years, And Then it's Your Turn to Step Up .
"And I felt liberated by the change of costumes and make sure That your hair is on the right and moving to places where they are all good to go And Then we have to stand for an hour, you know, there's a lot That comes with it. "
As a result of the static Position, the series turned in a much faster rate than is normal for a TV show.
"the time to roll the camera, is actually quite short, although the shooting days are often said 14 or 15 hours," Kelly. "They are often about three pages, while we filmed more like 10 to 12 pages in the value of the film material [per day]. And I found it very satisfying to do That . "
Jim Field Smith, Director and showrunner in criminal, says: "It is like a fish bowl - it doesn't matter what size it is, because it's a question of how macro, you get with The Details in it.
"And so part of the joy for us, after having worked, shows That a much larger production-scape, was going in The Other direction and say, 'we are going to zoom right to the absolute smallest detail.'
what a coincidence, had a similar problem, which is largely in an interrogation Room .
A large piece of The Line of duty-the final say in a police interrogation RoomBut Kay and Smith, they were not influenced too much by other films and shows, which were in a place
"Locke is right up My Street ," says Kay. "They're all creative challenges. You are just falling, you see yourself, if you can Get Out . So gently, we were aware of these things, but we have no kind of study - we wanted to take Our Own to the cramped situation. "
Smith says, the viewer is forced to notice the small details of The Format . In the opening episode, for example, a core of tension and plot development is built, the question of whether to take Tennant's character is a pencil lying on the table in front of him.
Whether or not he wriggles, it could be a sign of whether he's lying or not.
"Once you're in The Room , you are pretty much there," says Smith. "And I think, photographically, I wanted to try and bring some of That sensibility in The Show , the fact That , if to sit someone on a chair, and you're talking about, we are staring at just you. The Frame is locked in.
"And as a result, the viewer begins, all of The Details in this picture, because you are not distracted by the 400 other things. And so you start at zero, and because it knows the type of show you are watching, and you as a viewer, you are prompted to do That . "
