The surgeon, the said nipples were the 'faff'
life as a disabled person Can sometimes be very different and difficult, but in the midst of fix it, is the Humor.
The Following is an edited version of the sketch of Janine Hammond, whose life changed after Two rounds of triple-negative breast cancer. Lost led you this True Story for the BBC at the Edinburgh Fringe in the year 2019, where the issue was and Found.
I have A Confession to Make - I've lost my nipples.
Very reckless. Very irresponsible of me. And it is really annoying, because nipples are large. They feed their babies. They are domes with little pleasure, and warn you to wear when you need a coat.
I Personally prefer the whole Thing - the fleshy bit plus the nipple. The traditional combo.
the confession Number Two - I lost both my Breasts to cancer.
I didn't get prosthetic Breasts or implants, but I have, as you call it flap reconstruction Tram-flap.
As a former nurse I know the medical world loves acronyms, we don't have Time to say the big words. Tram stands for Trans-rectus-abdominis-muscle.
basically, everyone has Two of them and they are part of the of your six-pack. These Two muscles have now been moved from my abdomen up into my chest. Weird, I know.
The operation requires Two surgical teams. The Top team you take your breast, the cancer. Then The Other team split from hip-hip and take the entire front door of your belly, And Then basically the muscles built up, with all of your blood supply, and nerves, and use them to Make the fat and tissue, new Breasts.
they also Make a beautiful new belly button. It is amazing.
The First Time I had breast cancer was in 1997. I was 32, my children were small and I had just started a new job, but life is like That , isn't it?
In 2012, I found myself back in the "Bad News room" in The Hospital . They don't call it, but a lot of cancer centers have a space That clinical less than The Other with comfortable sofas and beautiful paintings on the walls.
I knew what was coming.
Sure enough, a surgeon is limited in the: "to do It again!", he said.
"Thanks, PAL," I thought.
he said he would remove both Breasts and do the TRAM reconstruction in a 12-hour operation.
"What's with the nipples?" I asked.
"nipples? Oh, you are a faff," replied The Surgeon .
"A faff?" I said. To spend "So, you're going to 12 hours, slicing and dicing me like The Bride of Chucky And Then you me and say nipples a faff to be together?"
"Well, I Can Make it, but you know. "
Storytelling Live: Lost and FoundReece was one of seven people with a disability or Mental Health problem, run a story on the theme of lost and found as part of the BBC ouch stories event at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe hosted by Chris Mccausland .
to watch the program.
Here is another story from The Event you like:
The Female Chancellor took me aside.
"The Thing with the nipples is That the male surgeons need to know not always appreciate how women may feel about the new excessive ones That you created," She Said .
"you tend not to warn you That they allow you to really stick to start, if you flatten a couple of years later. I'm not sure how you would feel about getting. spitz. "
"top?" I thought it would be. "Oh, God, I Can 't tips. "
I wondered about having a 3D tattoo. My local tattooist does a really good job, but only has a large hobby room - Can you imagine the next client to arrive, as you are tattooed, a new nipple?
So, the Chancellor gave me some prosthetic nipples. You literally just glue.
I have never worn them. on my Breasts.
What if she came with brains drive and talk with someone, and you're like, "Oh, you got a nipple on her Neck . "That would be terrible.
The only Time I have ever had to do my nipples in The Middle of my forehead, my David Bowie circa Ziggy Stardust impression to cheer me up.
the recovery from The surgery lasted a couple of months and I still had a couple of strange problems.
It feels like I'm wearing a corset all the Time , and because the muscles have been moved in my chest, up to my Breasts, I Can 't sit if you Can lie to me flat.
I also had a different kind of chemo This Time - FEC. Another initialism, consisting of a variety of drugs - 5FU, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide.
a Fun fact. Epirubicin will change the color of your urine. It only lasts for about 48 Hours , but it goes into a deep Portuguese Rose to a pale Provencal. It is great fun for family and friends.
As for my wounds to heal started, I noticed That my right breast bigger than my left. The Surgeon agreed, I had a operation to change to The Right side.
Then The Left breast was larger than The Right . So I had changed That , too. to create
But That nipple was still a faff.
with the help of the eerie, nerve and joint pain I've experienced, The Pain clinic suggested mindfulness.
I tried, but meditating with 10 other people in what was effectively a storage room just for me, so I started writing instead and got a place on a writers program.
I wrote a monologue about a woman with breast cancer, had my operation, but she was single and had to reveal itself every Time you started a relationship.
play traveled a bit and also donate to cancer research, I'm very happy about That .
What I'm not happy about my nipples.
As part of The Performance , my beautiful actress with a nipple in The Middle of the forehead determines to do her best, Ziggy Stardust .
But it turns out, theatres consisted of prosthetic nipples. So my very own nipples supply of the Actresses.
It is a very exciting Chapter in My Life , because I now get emails That say: "Janine, please Can I have your nipples?"
I like more of these E-Mails open on a crowded train, when I know someone reads over my shoulder.
To be honest, I'm always a little annoyed about it. My nipples appear to be in the theatre Without Me . You have A Life of its own.
So, if I said at the start: "I lost my nipples". I have.
I lost The First to cancer And Then , in the fickle world of Show Business .
