Mike Bloomberg's record as mayor of New York City and his support for the controversial stop-and-frisk policy was a big topic of conversation in the Democratic Party presidential candidate debate Last Night .
We have to fact-check some of the claims.
What is stop and frisk?
Stop-and-frisk, like the stop-and-search in the UK, is a Police tactic for reducing violent crimes. There are Police officers to stop forces, someone she's wearing in the suspicion of committing A Crime and to seek The Authority of a person if you are suspected of a gun.
to claim: Mike Bloomberg said: "I discovered that we had many, many, too many stop and frisks. We cut out 95% of it. "Reality Check : billionaire, businessman, was mayor of New York from 2002 to 2013, and during these years he expanded the use of stop-and-frisk.
Mr. Bloomberg, this policy was defended in October 2019. Then in November, a week before he launched his presidential candidacy, he apologized for it. In Last Night 's debate, he said that it was "out of control".
It is true, there was a great reduction in The Number of stop-and-frisk was brought by the Police against the end of his term, after which he its peak in 2011.
finished But, before that, had grown to More Than 700% since Mr. Bloomberg mayor in 2002.
95% figure he seems to have recognized quarterly data from The First quarter of 2012 compared with the Last Quarter of 2013, when the numbers are down from 203,500 to 12,485.
Police officers in New York City performed approximately five million stops during Mr. Bloomberg's three terms of office, to claim: Mr. Bloomberg said that he has successfully reduced The Crime rate in New York [we think he meant, The Number of murders] "of 650, 50% up to 300".Reality Check : The Number of murders in New York City fell by half, while Mr Bloomberg administration, and The Number of serious crimes decreased significantly by More Than 45%.
Was this due to the stop-and-frisk-policy?
city officials have argued that it was the key to reducing The City 's crime.
But, there's one that says stop-and-frisk "almost no difference" to The Crime , and instead cited the increased presence of Police in high-crime neighborhoods as an important factor.
The figures show that the two murders and overall crime to fall further from 2013, when the stop-and-frisk has been significantly reduced, and after Mr. Bloomberg left office.
More Than 87% of the people and felted in the case of Mr. Bloomberg, time is stopped as the mayor were innocent and about 1. 5% of the searches found a gun.
to claim: Bernie Sanders proposed stop-and-frisk targeted minorities and "went to African American and Latino people in an impudent way."Reality Check : Almost 90% of people stopped during the Bloomberg era were Afro-American or Hispanic (and this continues today).
These two groups combined, around 50% of New York 's population, according to the 2010 census data.
defenders of the policy, to deny, it was targeting and say the stops were conduct on the basis of the description of the suspect or the suspect.
In 2013, a New York judge ruled the program was unconstitutional and ordered it to be reformed.
to claim: Joe Biden said stop-and-frisk led to throw the "nearly five million young black men up against a wall".Reality Check verdict: This is not true. There are about five million stops were recorded by the Police during Mr. Bloomberg's tenure. But, as we are about the half of the Afro-Americans have shown.
