Small-time crook Salvatore (Giancarlo Giannini) scrapes together a living as an interloper at a hospital in Naples, Italy. When widow Luciella (Lina Sastri) seeks his help to track down the body of her dead husband -- who committed suicide by lighting himself on fire to protest a labor dispute -- Salvatore is immediately suspicious of her story.
