Nickie (Richard Barthelmess), a small-time criminal, lives with his father, Buck (Montagu Love), a ruthless gangster. One day Buck reveals that Nickie's birth mother is actually Mrs. Bancroft (Alice Joyce), the wife of the governor, and that he intends to blackmail her by revealing Nickie's existence.
