Islamic rebellion in Xinjiang
In 1937 an Islamic rebellion broke out in southern Xinjiang. The rebels were 1,500 Turkic Muslims led by Kichik Akhund, tacitly aided by the 36th Division against the pro-Soviet provincial forces of Sheng Shicai.
